Jody Shipka wrote a quote in her conclusion about how writing is “carved out of time and space.” I’m even more aware of this understanding than I was when I first started this course about what really goes into a piece of writing. Jody also writes about the tools needed to create and how those tools enable the writer to explore further. Throughout her book Shipka writes about creating new forms of writing that can go beyond the page and into a digital reality. These digital works are far more interactive and intriguing than just reading regular text. They have the ability to allow the viewer to reflect in a different way when the digital story “plays.” What I also find interesting about her quote, “carved out of time and space” is that the quote is saying writing is more than just pen and paper, or even technology driven–”time and space” open the platforms to writing to encompass any possible way to convey a message or feeling.

It’s interesting to think of ‘carving’ in time and space — such a literal word to use to describe an action on phenomena that are neither solid nor material. Perhaps this leads to the notion of the body extended into time and space thru digital compositions.
